German played 184 matches for North Melbourne between 1984 and 1994.
He then began his coaching career with Bernie in the Tasmanian Football League before joining Hawthorn and later West Coast as an assistant coach/
After leaving West Coast, he coached Subaco to two premierships in the WAFL, before joining Fremantle in 2007.
In 2009, he returned to Victoria and took the reins at Casey Scorpions. He then moved to be senior coach of Williamstown and a development coach at the Western Bulldogs.
Most recently, German was the head coach of Coburg in the VFL between 2014 and 2017., taking a break this season.
