Seven residents die in flu outbreak at Wangaratta

SEVEN elderly residents have died in a mass flu outbreak at a Wangaratta nursing home.

The residents of St John’s Retirement Village were aged 70 to 94 and had other conditions that made them susceptible to the flu, the Department of Health said this morning.

This spike in influenza and respiratory cases in adults and young children this year has Wangaratta’s public hospital nearing its peak.

The Department of Health urges people to practice good hand hygiene, cover their cough, don’t go to work when unwell or send sick kids to school.

Northeast Health Wangaratta infection prevention and control manager Kim Comensoli said during July there have been 15 cases of influenza in adults or RSV in kids.

“It has put pressure on our beds and we are nearing the peak period of the season now,” Ms Comensoli said.

Health authorities say it's not too late to get a flu shot.
