Men's Shed Open Saturdays

Increase Demand After COVID

The Wodonga Men's Shed will now be open on Saturdays, to keep up with increased demand.

On Jamieson Court, Wodonga, the shed is normally open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. But since opening up again after the COVID-19 lockdown, there has been a big uptick in interest, with one or two new members coming down every week.

"Over the COVID period, we had a lot of blokes locked up in their sheds at home," explains Treasurer Garry Knight.

"So that's turned into us needing to provide more time for our existing members, but we're also getting a lot of younger blokes who are working during the week, wanting to come along on other days, particularly Saturdays."

The shed provides local men with a place to go, chat with other local men, and get involved in construction projects, using their woodworking and metalworking shops.

Mr Knight says a big part of the appeal is that it's low pressure - there's no need to book, and there's no need to be part of committees or organising.

"What we're finding is that blokes tend to operate in small little social circles, they don't often have lots and lots of friends," he says.

"What the Men's Shed does, is it provides a spot where they can just come along at their leisure, whenever it suits them, and participate in the way that they want to."

The Wodonga Shed will now trial opening on Saturdays from 8am to 4pm as a trial, with predictions that the new hours will become permanent.
