New mental health sites are being rolled out across the state in six "priority" areas.

Benalla was identified as having the highest per capita level of suicide in Victoria over the 2011-2020 period, as well as one of the highest per capita levels of suicide attempts presenting to emergency departments.

Working with local mental health providers, the service will be a "front-door" for anyone needing access to support, therapies and well-being treatment. The aim is to help people before they reach crisis point.

The state government will start a consultation process with local services in the north east, with the aim of opening the hub by the end of 2022.

Mental Health Victoria has welcome the Commission's focus on removing barriers Victorians face when trying to get help.

“We commend the emphasis on making services available in the community, particularly in regional Victoria," says CEO Angus Clelland.

“For too long, Victorians have had few options but to present to hospital emergency departments or to suffer in silence. The reforms announced will change all that.”
