The Rural City of Wangaratta is embarking on an extensive project which is intended to make the city more user friendly and see greater access by pedestrians.

Council spokesperson Steven Burke says there are a number of projects in the works which will make the area more user friendly for visitors and residents.

"Council is going to create a pedestrian friendly shaded streetscape linking King George Gardens with Wangaratta CBD. The project will involve the installation of 2 pedestrian crossings between the Co Store and King George Gardens, new street lighting to improve pedestrian safety, and the replacement of angle parking with parallel parking".

"The CBD master plan really looks at the entire CBD and how it can be improved for visitors and for residents. The work will commence in February and expect it to be completed in July 2019".

Mr. Burke says it will be an inconvenience but will be well worth it in the end.

"There will be some short term inconvenience for motorists as works take place along Ovens street, but the end result will be well worth it".
