Border checks slightly relaxed

Police will slightly relax checks on cars going through the border checkpoint.

QR scanners are not being used on every car to ease congestion, before the NSW-Victorian border opens.

Albury Superintendent Paul Smith says officers will be visually checking drivers licences and permits.

"We are attempting to cut down those delay times as much as possible."

Albury Mayor Kevin Mack says businesses have been doing it hard on both sides of the border but all we can do is hang on until the day of the opening.

The NSW Government announced the border will be open to allow free movement between Victoria and the state on November 23.

NSW Border Commissioner James McTavish says not many people from Melbourne have attempted to cross since the ring of steel lifted, but they anticipate more cars in the next few weeks.

Anyone who is not eligible for a border permit is being urged to stay in Victoria until the border opens again.
