Mr Smith spent 23 years as an army officer, from 1976 to 1999, including overseas service.

He started working for local councils from 2007, and worked in Indigo Shire from 2014 to 2017. One of his great achievements for the area was securing $5.2 million in government funding to build the Beechworth to Osbornes Flat Rail Trail.

After news of his death on Saturday, Indigo Shire Mayor Jenny O’Connor expressed her sadness and deepest condolences to his family and friends.

"On behalf of Councillors, the Executive Management Team and all staff, we are all shocked and saddened at the news of Gerry’s passing following a battle with cancer," said Cr O'Connor.

“Gerry was a great advocate for Indigo Shire and its people, and his legacy will be long remembered and appreciated. He was a man of integrity, a kind and decent man, and a much loved family man and work colleague.”
