In a statement Virgin Australia says it is not commercially viable to operate flights to the affected destinations with the expected demand.

Other places that have been removed from Virgin's flightpath are Ayers Rock, Tamworth, Port Macquarie, Hervey Bay and Mildura.

The move leaves the Albury-Sydney route open to Rex and Qantas.

Virgin refund details will be notified to those who had booked online, and to travel agents who had taken bookings.
