The final touches are being put on the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre before its opening in the next few weeks.

The Wangaratta Council say they are confident that everything is on track with work on the $17 million project. They say they are aiming for an opening on the 19th of December, but won't have final confirmation until next week.

"All hands are on deck to make sure that - come Christmas and the summer season - the pool is firing and ready to go for all Wangaratta residents and visitors coming to the town," said Mayor Dean Rees.

"As we know, we have these massive long summers and heatwaves on a regular basis. So the pool's going to be a great haven for people to come and spend their time."

The 50m solar-heated outdoor pool and the indoor pool were both filled last week. Final tiling, landscaping and concreting is being completed now, and the splash pad should be ready within the fortnight.

Mayor Rees also says that locals should be excited and proud to have the state-of-the-art centre.

"It's a great thing for the community to also state that: here's Wangaratta, we're in the top 10 regional cities outside of Melbuorne, and we're moving ahead as good and as quick as some of those other big regional cities," he says.

"It's a great attribute for Wangaratta, and well and truly deserved by the citizens of Wang."
