Grassfire sparked and man arrested after ute stolen

Police have arrested a man after he allegedly took flight from a burning stolen utility vehicle which had been speeding through Sumsion Gardens in Wodonga.

The Border Mail reports that the man was in a highly agitated state following his arrest on Sangsters Road on Sunday morning, approximately 300 hundred metres from where the Toyota HiLux had crashed into a tree near Felix Grundy Park.

Witnesses reported the car being driven erratically through parkland, with the man allegedly returning to the vehicle multiple times before riding away on a bike.

The incident also appears to have sparked a grass fire, the likely cause of which was a damaged wheel rim coming into contact with a concrete footpath. Firefighter Sean Crosthwaite said the fire was quickly extinguished.

The owner of the ute is reported as feeling ‘pretty dirty’ about the incident, describing the uniquely customised vehicle as his ‘pride and joy’, and saying ‘There’s not another one like it’.

Detective Senior Constable Tracy Jarrott said the man will be questioned in relation to handling stolen goods and various driving offences, but appealed to other witnesses who were in the park to come forward.
